TIA hosting workshop on data center evolution

On October 13 the TIA will host The Data Center Evolution: Meeting the Demands of an ICT Ecosystem in Transformation.

On October 13 the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) will host a day-long workshop titled “The Data Center Evolution: Meeting the Demands of an ICT Ecosystem in Transformation.” Held at TIA headquarters in Arlington, VA, the workshop is intended and appropriate for data center and colocation providers; Internet service providers, carriers and operators; government agencies and enterprises focused on working with data centers and cloud services; CTOs, CIOs, CFOs and CISOs (chief information security officers); network architects/engineers; IT managers and directors; and marketing executives. BICSI has approved the seminar for five continuing education credits (CECs) for its credential holders. Attendees of the TIA seminar will receive five CECs toward renewal of BICSI's professional credentials.

When describing the workshop, the TIA noted, “Brontobytes of data are streaming over fiber lines into data centers around the world. Ever-increasing connectivity and data streams created by smart cities, e-health, connected retail, connected vehicles, augmented and virtual reality, video and OTT services increasingly put pressure on data center pipes and designs. These are exciting times for data centers as they contemplate how they will address the quickly changing data management marketplace. Hyperscale data centers are being developed by corporations and cloud service providers. Rearchitecting of data center interiors as well as external long-haul communications and interconnects are taking place.” The session will present an in-depth look at the latest issues faced by data centers and their demanding clients, technology trends and solutions, and infrastructure standards.

The opening keynote will be presented by James Coe, senior principal and director of clinical facilities for consulting/engineering firm Syska Hennessy Group.

A panel titled “Hyperscale Data Centers: Re-architecting for Bandwidth and Speed” will follow the opening keynote. The panel will feature Dave Hessong, manager of data center global market development for Corning Optical Communications; as well as Patrick VanVickle, director of research and development with Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. They will be accompanied by Jackson Metcalf, an associate with design firm Gensler. The panel will be moderated by Brett Kirby, director of business development for data centers with Power and Telephone Supply.

A late-morning presentation by Panduit director of technology Brett Lane will discuss the TIA-492AAAE standard that specifies wideband multimode fiber (WBMMF).

Other presentations during the day will cover topics including data center security (protecting the cyber and the physical plant), and the blurring lines of retail and wholesale colocation. An afternoon panel will be titled “The Growing Role of SDN in Data Center Operations” and will feature experts from Emerson, Infera and Level 3 Communications; it will be moderated by Solutions Reservoir principal Darrell Tanno.
