TIA urges Congress: Avoid mandates on wireless 911 location issues

Jan. 21, 2014
TIA sent letter to the Senate Commerce Committee in advance of a January 16 hearing.

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has urged Congress to avoid mandates regarding wireless 911 location issues.

In a letter sent to the Senate Commerce Committee in advance of a January 16 hearing on this topic, TIA noted that the information and communications technology (ICT) industry "continues to experiment with highly innovative approaches" that hold the promise of improving location accuracy over time.

"However, such technologies remain in their nascent stage," said TIA in statement. "Meanwhile, TIA members continue to help facilitate the transfer of currently-available location information between customers, service providers, and first responders."
