WiFi-enabled telescope dubbed ‘coolest app-cessory’

April 17, 2014
Wired gave a glowing review of Celestron’s NexStar Evolution line of telescopes, which can be controlled via smartphone.

The wired.com headline atop Tim Moynihan’s review of Celestron’s WiFi-enabled NexStar Evolution series of microscopes characterized the instruments as “the coolest app-cessory in the galaxy.” Within the review, Moynihan explained, “The WiFi-enabled lineup of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes … show up as an access point in a smartphone or tablet’s list of available networks. Connecting to the telescope to a mobile device lets you control it by tapping areas on a star-map app. Simply choose a celestial body and the telescope’s motorized mount and fork arm automatically position the scope.”

The flagship product in the series, the NexStar Evolution 9.25, enables users to “control your telescope wirelessly from you iOS or Android smartphone or tablet with the free Celestron mobile app with planetarium interface and SkyAlign technology,” its website explains. It describes the instrument as “the first Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with integrated WiFi. Leave your hand control behind and slew to all the best celestial objects with a tap of your smartphone or tablet. Connect your device to NexStar Evolution built-in wireless network, and explore the universe with the Celestron mobile app for iOS and Android.”
