Green for St. Patty's: ABB lands Irish sea wind farm cabling project

March 16, 2015
"The Walney Extension cable link will help deliver clean renewable power to more than one million people,” commented Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Systems division.

As reported at Recharge, a journal of renewable energy technology, "Power technology giant ABB has landed the $130m order for a high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system for Danish developer Dong Energy's 660MW Walney Extension wind project in the Irish Sea."

The report states that "ABB will design, manufacture, supply and commission the 157km of 220kv HVAC extruded cabling that will tie the development, located in 21-55 metres of water 15km off the UK coast, to shore, along with a further 24km of underground line linking it to the country's grid."

Covering an area of some 149 sq km, the Walney Extension will sprawl over an area twice as large as the existing Walney offshore wind farm, said the report. Dong has chosen to divide the turbine supply contracts for the Walney Extension evenly between OEMs MHI-Vestas and Siemens.

"The Walney Extension cable link will help deliver clean renewable power to more than one million people,” commented Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Systems division. "This project reaffirms ABB’s commitment to delivering power and productivity for a better world and reinforces our position as a leading provider of innovative high-voltage cable technology," he concluded.
