Network cable for nuclear-power facilities

March 30, 2015
Comtran says its X-Link communications network cable is up to the task of close proximity to machinery, fluids, and hazardous waste inherent in nuclear-plant applications.

Comtran Cable recently announced a line of X-Link communications cables designed for use in nuclear power production facilities. Comtran says X-Link network cable “provides a long-term solution to data communications, security, and environmental monitoring systems.”

The company adds, “Commercially available off-the-shelf products are insufficient for nuclear environments due to their proximity to machinery, fluids, and hazardous waste. In response, Comtran’s engineers have designed a line of communications cables that will guarantee the specified category data transmission and will stand up to harsh installation methods and environments. Featuring a shield and a thermoset insulation and jacket, these cables reduce EMI and enhance thermal stability, all while maintaining resistance to fluids and radiation.”

Bruce Sinott, director of business development for Comtran Cable, offered the following concerning X-Link and other network cable brands that users may want to deploy in nuclear environments: “Other brands may provide a physically robust cable, but none have the ability to resist temperature extremes and few have the ability to meet high transmission rates.”

The X-Link network cables are available in Category 3 (4 through 400 pair), Category 5e, and Category 6 (shown); all are suitable for data communications, security systems, environmental monitoring, supervisory control and data acquisition, as well as certain low-voltage control and instrumentation circuits.
