Federal grant brings Gigabit Internet via FTTH to Alabama

Alabama's Troy Cable to supply 1-Gbps Internet services via fiber to the home with Adtran's equipment.

Alabama's Troy Cable will supply 1-Gbps Internet services via fiber to the home (FTTH) with equipment Adtran (NASDAQ: ADTN), the fiber-optic communications systems house said last week. The FTTH roll-out will reportedly cover more than 20 communities across the state.

Troy received a Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant for a middle mile project in 2012. It selected Adtran to supply its Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access Platform (MSAP), Total Access 900 series IP Business Gateways, and the NetVanta 7100 Unified Communications platform for the 595-mile fiber-optic network deployment. The 1-Gbps services likely leverage this platform, speculates CablingInstall.com's sister brand, Lightwave.

"Our customers expect the fastest internet connection possible for telecommuting, video streaming, gaming, and more. Add to that the growing number of devices in each household, launching a Gigabit Internet Service offering was a logical next step. We have the fiber infrastructure in place and are delivering the fastest, most reliable gigabit service available in Alabama," commented Jake Cowen, general manager of Troy Cable.
