Huawei demos wireless 4G voice, HD video delivery for Cox Communications

Jan 26, 2010

PLANO, Texas -- Huawei announced the successful completion of voice calling and high definition video streaming over wireless networks using fourth generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology for Cox Communications, cited as the third-largest cable provider in the United States. Cox’s 4G technology and service trials utilized the AWS and 700 MHz spectrum that it acquired in Federal Communication Commission auctions in 2006 and 2008.

“Huawei is the industry leader on LTE technology and is already deploying LTE networks for several operators globally,” said Wan Biao, President of Wireless Product Line, Huawei. “As we continue building on the North America LTE field trials started in 2008, this is another milestone reflecting our unwavering commitment to helping operators deliver advanced mobile broadband services to their customers.”

Huawei maintains that its SingleRAN solution supports network multi-mode convergence and evolution while reducing total costs of ownership for operators. The company says the end-to-end LTE solution provides an All-IP, high speed, low latency and highly spectrum efficient mobile network, which greatly enhances the experience of mobile multi-media services. Huawei’s CDMA/LTE or UMTS/LTE SingleRAN solution, plus self-organizing network (SON) technology, help operators gain the competitive advantage while reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).

“Our collaboration with Huawei has enabled us to achieve monumental strides in the trial,“ said Stephen Bye, Cox’s vice president of wireless. “Huawei’s dedication and support, the understanding of our requirements and ability to meet our aggressive project milestones were key factors in selecting them as a partner for the trials. We are encouraged by the success of the trials, which further validate our decision to pursue 4G based on LTE, specifically the 3GPP Release 8 standard.”

Among the world's leading LTE/SAE providers, Huawei has won 6 LTE commercial contracts and is cooperating on LTE development with over 42 leading operators in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Huawei has made more than 3,300 LTE/SAE contributions to 3GPP and 168 patents have been granted by ETSI as of Dec 2009.
