Anti-counterfeit search site combats gray market electronics components

Jun 9, 2011

The Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) announced that Digi-Key is the first company to sign on as a sponsor of its industry-owned and managed inventory search website, www.eciaauthorized.com.

ECIA says that customers can avoid gray market and counterfeit product by using the new site, which lists only inventory that is genuine and backed by the manufacturer’s warranty. The site is described as a key component in the association’s efforts to fight the sale of counterfeit parts. (All sales are completed through Digi-Key's website, with no inventory offered through the ECIA.)

“Digi-Key strongly supports ECIA’s decision to establish a website limited to product sold by authorized distributors,” comments Digi-Key’s President Mark Larson. “The site represents a major step forward in protecting buyers from counterfeit product. There is no other site like it in the industry."

The ECIA is a not-for-profit trade association representing manufacturers of electronic components, their authorized distribution partners, and manufacturer representatives. The association is dedicated to promoting and improving the business environment for the authorized sale of electronic components.

Digi-Key's Larson continues, "Design engineers and professional purchasers have to know that the product they purchase is not counterfeit. There are two ways to be assured that product is not counterfeit:  purchase directly from the manufacturer or purchase directly from an authorized distributor. The site requires that distributors only list product for lines for which they are authorized and purchase directly from the manufacturer.”
