Transition Networks acquires Patapsco Communications

Aug 3, 2011

Communications Systems Inc., the parent company of Transition Networks, recently acquired Patapsco Designs Limited and will incorporate the company into the Transition Networks business unit. Communications Systems Inc. says the acquisition "significantly bolsters Transition Networks' position as a leading manufacturer of broadband hardware solutions aimed at service provider, enterprise and government networks."

Of particular technical note, the acquisition adds pseudowire, also known as Circuit Emulation Services over IP or TDM over IP (Wikipedia entry here), to Transition's technology suite. The newly acquired technology "allows for the transportation of TDM traffic over IP and Ethernet packet networks," the company said when announcing the acquisition. "Patapsco has built a 20-year reputation for quality, customer support, and focus on delivering solutions for difficult technical challenges, such as highly accurate clocking and synchronization necessary for applications such as mobile backhaul delivery via packet networks."

This section of Patapsco's website includes a description of TDM over IP and its importance in packet-based networks.

Communications Systems Inc.'s president and chief executive officer, William Schultz, explained that the addition of the Patapsco product line to Transition Networks strategically expands the company's product offering to the service-provider market. "Patapsco has a strong line of existing products that we can immediately leverage in Transition Networks' customer and distribution network around the world," he said. "The combined engineering efforts of Patapsco and Transition Networks will allow us to bring new products to market that utilize core technologies from both companies."
