Fluke Networks (Everett, WA; www. flukenetworks.com) is in the process of integrating the Camarillo, CA operations of Harris Corp. (www.testsets.harris.com) into its outside plant operation. Fluke Networks announced in May that it had entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the two business units within Harris Corp. for approximately $50 million in cash. The closing of the transaction is expected shortly.

The company also makes punch-down tools, fundamental cable testers, battery sets and knives.
"Eventually, we will integrate [the Harris name] to Fluke Networks," says Paul Stone, worldwide communications/brand strategy manager for Fluke Networks. The purchase is seen as part of Fluke Networks' effort to position itself for leadership in the telecom/outside plant test market. "We are trying to broaden our vision, which was to give the telecom technician a better tool," says Stone.
Fluke Networks' outside plant group specializes in high-end optical fiber and copper testing equipment, and mission-critical operation support systems. With the addition of the Harris divisions, it will now also serve field technicians with the tools needed for everyday field work.
"Our original vision is to make the technicians in the field more efficient," says Stone. "What do you give them before you send them out? We see it as trying to improve service and support of this local loop, from the phone system from the central office to house and back."
For Harris, the purchase is seen as an opportunity to expand sales of its tools and test set lines. Harris hopes its access test and management and portable tool lines will now go global through Fluke Networks' international channels.
Stone says there are no immediate plans to make staffing or other changes at Harris. "We don't want to interrupt their solid contracts" with customers, he says. The majority of Harris employees will be joining Fluke Networks. Thomas Erdmann, vice president of the Camarillo operations for Harris, will now work as a consultant along with Ed Sztuka, the director of Fluke Networks' Outside Plant Business Unit.
