February 18, 2009 -- The Uptime Institute has announced the corporations selected for its "Global Green 100" list, highlighting the significant energy efficiency achievements of global corporations operating major data centers.
The list includes exemplary Fortune 500 and InformationWeek 500 organizations with a demonstrated board-level policy and governance commitment to increasing energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of their enterprise IT and data center operations. These corporations have the largest investment enterprise IT and have taken a highly visible leadership role in mandating dramatic improvements in energy efficiency and green-house gas reduction.
"Only 1 to 2 percent of total energy consumed in a data center produces useful computing. The rest covers overheads and inefficiencies tied to technology choices, service level agreements and the way the IT is managed," said Kenneth G. Brill, Executive Director of the Institute. "In an era of increasing energy scarcity and escalating costs, corporations cannot afford to ignore these losses. The companies included in the Global Green 100 have showed an exemplary commitment to improving their data center operations, not only reducing their carbon footprints, but also realizing significant financial savings."
