Fiber standards, applications addressed in web seminar

Jun 3, 2011

A seminar that will be delivered via the web on Thursday, June 16 will address fiber-optic cabling standards and applications from three angles: cable, connectivity and testing.

Produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, the seminar will be titled Fiber-Optic Standards and Technologies and will include three presentations. First, Tony Irujo, sales engineer with OFS, will present on fiber-optic cable, covering topics such as OM3 and OM4 as well as standard-development efforts taking place within TIA on the topic of bend-insensitive multimode fiber.

Then Gary Bernstein, director of product management for fiber and data center solutions with Leviton Network Solutions, will provide information on connectivity options for 40- and 100-Gbit Ethernet systems. His presentation will explain what IEEE specifications say about the use of 8- and 20-fiber connections for 40- and 100-GbE, respectively. He will describe the IEEE's recommended connectivity setup and other allowed scenarios.

The seminar's final presentation will cover standards and best practices for testing installed fiber-optic systems. Details of that presentation are still being finalized, but the presentation will cover the use of OTDR and OLTS equipment per standard specifications. It will also delve into the encircled-flux launch condition, which the TIA recently adopted as a standard for testing installed multimode fiber. The presentation will discuss the practical application of encircled flux in the field today, and the availability - or lack thereof - of equipment to test using the encircled flux launch condition.

Attendees of the seminar who hold BICSI's RCDD, NTS, Installer, Technician, RITP or Certified Trainer designations can earn one continuing education credit for those certifications by attending the seminar in its entirety. After its live broadcast on June 16, the event will be available for viewing on-demand for six months.
