PLX Technology, Inc. announced that it will deliver a presentation on enterprise data center clustering using PCI Express (PCIe) at the upcoming Server Design Summit, in Santa Clara, CA. The presentation by Ajoy Aswadhati, PLX director of system products, is titled Scaling Data Center Services with PCI Express, and will provide the audience with an in-depth look at how PCIe enables host-to-host connectivity and I/O sharing in servers and switches, thus empowering a new generation of lower-cost, low-power, simplified architectures for data centers, cloud computing and other powerful server-centric applications.
To be held on Nov. 29 at 2:30 p.m., the PLX presentation is part of the Server Design Summit's System Scaling and Networking track. This session will feature a discussion on how PCIe provides a simple, elegant interface to expand servers so that they meet the needs of higher performance and greater flexibility for today's demanding enterprise environments. Aswadhati will address a range of PCIe-clustering issues critical to efficient server designs: the various types of clustering, the evolution of PCIe through the current 3.0 standard (PCIe Gen3), shared I/Os using non-transparency (NT), PCIe fabrics using optical cabling, software requirements, and cost and power savings through PCIe, followed by selected case studies in server design.
PCIe Gen3 leverages a legacy of interconnect technology spanning two decades. The PCI Express Base Specification 3.0 dictates bidirectional 8GT/s of traffic per serial lane, enabling a PCIe Gen3 48-lane switch to manage 96GBps of bi-directional peer-to-peer traffic. Due to PCIe's far-reaching applicability in servers, computing, communications and industrial applications, its ecosystem is widely deployed and its cost efficiencies are realized industry-wide. Technology such as NT has enabled PCIe to provide to cloud computing and data centers a level of host-to-host connectivity not capable in other interconnect technologies.
