Can cabling installers benefit from preterminated systems' 'guaranteed performance'?

Oct 13, 2011

In the third installment of its eight-part "Fiber Truths" information series, Fluke Networks asks if cabling installers can benefit from the claim made by manufacturers of preterminated fiber-optic systems that these systems offer guaranteed performance. Specifically, Fluke Networks asks the following four questions concerning the installation of preterm fiber systems.

  1. What constitutes the marketed performance by the manufacturer?
  2. Does the cable performance meet a specific industry standard?
  3. What are the specific terms and conditions of the guarantee?
  4. How are time and materials for installation treated?

The fourth question may be of most interest to cabling-system installers. In its "Truths Part 3" document, Fluke Networks expands on the question as follows. "The question that needs to be answered is, in the event of a failure is the installer 'on the hook' for the time and materials to repair or replace bad cable? ... Since no installer wants to spend scarce resources fixing problems rooted in bad cable, connectors or cable assemblies, the responsibilities for this should be spelled out in the guarantee."

The paper impresses upon installers to carefully review the performance guarantees of preterminated fiber systems they will install, with a keen eye toward ensuring the guarantee protects and benefits them, the installers.
