Door Sills - Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Door Sills

Nov 1, 1995

Q: Why is it that door sills for telecommunications closets are not allowed by the Building Industry Consulting Service International Inc.`s manual or EIA/TIA-569? Also, if you are supposed to maintain a separation from power lines (1 foot, according to BICSI), are multichannel raceways Category 5-compliant? If you use one section of the raceway for power and the other for telecommunications, then you are not following BICSI or TIA recommendations for Category 5 wiring.

A: It is easier to roll equipment and tool boxes through a doorway that doesn`t have a hump in the floor. That`s why door sills are prohibited.

As for your other question, you are not the only one puzzled by these pathway separation distance requirements. This standard currently is EIA/TIA-569 (Table 10.4-1). This section will be revised in TIA/EIA-569-A.
