General Instrument Corp. (Chicago, IL) has announced that its Comm Scope Division (Hickory, NC) has acquired the Thermatics unit of Teledyne Inc. (Elm City, NC) for $18 million. Teledyne Thermatics manufactures high-performance wire and cable for high-temperature applications. The unit will be integrated into coaxial-cable manufacturer Comm Scope`s Network Cable operation.

Crius Inc. (Bethesda, MD), a telecommunications engineering company, has announced the launching of the Crius Foundation, which will offer a "boot-camp" telecommunications engineering curriculum that is not vendor-specific. The foundation will certify at three levels: specialist, generalist and junior engineer, the latter designation meant to foster interest in the field at the high-school level. The Crius Foundation will also be developing instructional aids to further its program.

CallWare Technologies Inc. (Salt Lake City, UT) has founded the Multimedia Telecommunications Institute (MTI), a training institute and certification program aimed at resellers and end-users interested in multimedia computer telephony.
