Walker introduces cost-comparison software

Oct 1, 1996

Barbara E. Thompson

Walker Systems Inc. (Williamstown, WV), a Wiremold Co., has introduced a new service that lets specifiers of building wiring systems compare the initial and life-cycle costs of a variety of open-floor wire-management systems. The service is based on Walker`s Size-Up cost-comparison software. Working together, specifiers and Walker representatives can now access the computer program and use real-life data to generate life-cycle cost comparisons.

The Size-Up program generates life-cycle cost analysis reports spanning 2 to 30 years. The reports factor in key variables that include project square footage, materials, labor, rate of workstation additions and relocations, and annual inflation rate. The software evaluates 10 different configurations of open-floor systems, including Walkerduct, under-floor duct, cellular duct, cellular under-floor duct, telepower poles, poke-throughs and access floor. It then generates cost-breakdown reports, cost-comparison reports, life-cycle reports and a variety of graphs.

According to the company, wire-management systems such as in-floor installations are an increasingly popular option for building owners who want to design in maximum flexibility while reducing the life-cycle cost of a building`s electrical, voice and data cabling systems. "A life-cycle cost analysis provides objective evidence to address concerns about a building`s long-term operational costs," says Ruth Wyckoff, product manager for in-floor products at Walker. "Our representatives are now equipped with a tool to assist architects, engineers and other specifiers in considering all design and mechanical alternatives and provide the owner with the most cost-effective wire-management system for the project."

Walker developed the Size-Up program after extensive research with architects, engineers, building owners and contractors. The input of these industry professionals was used as a base of information on the features desired in life-cycle cost software that could deliver objective evidence to customers looking for the most cost-effective wire-management system.
