Exfo Electro-optical Engineering (Vanier, QC, Canada), a fiber-optic test-equipment manufacturer, is now offering its IQ Calibration System for in-house fiber-optic instrument calibration and verification. The IQ-1500 calibration power meter and IQ-2100 DFB laser source modules join the company`s modular IQ-200 fiber-optic test system to perform local calibration and verification of any fiber-optic power meter. For more information, call the company at (418) 683-0211, or fax (418) 683-2170.

Norland Products (New Brunswick, NJ) has released an instructional video that describes the basic theory of interferometry and how to use it effectively to ensure the quality of high-performance, PC-polished fiber-optic connectors. The 10-minute video, Interferometry for Quality Control of Connectors, can be ordered by calling (908) 545-7828 or faxing (908) 545-9542.

Last summer, Fotec Inc. (Medford, MA) launched a fiber-optic power meter for cable-TV applications. Designed for testing cable-TV transmission networks, the FOtest`R Catv is inexpensive enough--$239--to provide one per installer, so that technicians can guard against high-powered laser emissions. Jim Hayes, president and founder, says his company will introduce low-priced, special-purpose power meters for telecommunications and data communications applications this fall.

ADC Telecommunications Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) has announced a major expansion of its wireless physical infrastructure capabilities with the acquisition of Solitra Oy (Kempele, Finland). Solitra Oy designs, manufactures and markets radio- frequency filters and other wireless base-station components and subsystems. ADC has acquired the majority of Solitra Oy`s common stock, with further commitments to come.

Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs--Louisville, CO) and its member companies have created a task force of industry experts to help cable operators deal with enhanced-services issues. Enhanced services, such as digital video, high-speed data and telephony, are expected to be offered by many cable operators over the next few years, and will require specialized training in technical issues relating to digital transmission. Tony Werner of TCI Communications will head the task force; CableLabs staff liaison will be Doug Semon, visiting executive for network operations.
