When introduced in 1995, the lan Design Manual, published by bicsi (Tampa, FL), was the culmination of months of work by the organization`s Engineering and Methods Committee. The manual included 15 chapters on local area networks (lans), as well as a glossary, bibliography, and index.
The manual became the study guide for bicsi`s registered communications distribution designer (rcdd) and lan Specialist exams, detailing topics including cabling standards, lan topologies, topology designs, and lan software.
Earlier this year, bicsi introduced a second edition of the manual, which will be used as the basis for the rcdd and lan Specialist exams beginning next month. This edition has been expanded to two volumes and is 1360 pages long. bicsi says that, based on feedback from readers of the original edition, the second edition has been changed to include an easier-to-read format, an expanded glossary, individual reference sections for each chapter, standards-compliant configuration guidelines for lan design, and more than 300 illustrations, tables, and examples.
