The local area network (LAN) has rapidly become the backbone of almost every business enterprise, so it is a little surprising that LAN wiring has not attracted more book-length publishing. (The latest book on the subject on my shelf was published in 1993.)
McGraw-Hill (New York City) has remedied this seeming neglect of a technologically complicated and rapidly changing field with LAN Wiring: An Illustrated Guide to Network Cabling, by James Trulove. This 320-page paperback, priced at $32.95, begins with a discussion of design considerations, followed by chapters on system design, types of cabling media, and LAN topologies. A second section of the book covers wiring devices: outlets, connecting blocks, patch panels, connectors, and patch cords. The final section looks at testing, troubleshooting, monitoring, and cable-plant administration. The illustrated volume closes with resource appendices on standards and organizations, a glossary, and an index.
