A star is born - Cabling Installation & Maintenance

A star is born

Mark A. DeSorbo

He has graced the front covers of our magazine and went nameless for several months, but it wasn`t long after Rodney Radius got his name that he and his creators got the recognition they deserved.

This past June, Cabling Installation & Maintenance magazine accepted regional and national awards for the graphic elements of its July 1998 cover during two recent award ceremonies. That cover, which adorns the Fifth Anniversary Special Edition issue, features Mr. Radius, our "cable guy."

The magazine nabbed first place at the East Coast regional awards ceremony of the American Society of Business Press Editors (ASBPE) in New York City. The publication won the Gold Award for Graphics Excellence in the Front Cover, Non-photo category for a magazine with circulation under 80,000.

Cabling Installation & Maintenance received yet another award at the latter of the two ceremonies in late June in conjunction with the ASBPE national conference in Chicago. The magazine received the bronze award in the category Front Cover, Non- photo, Circulation Under 80,000. The program includes 24 categories, with each category broken into under- and over-80,000 circulation.

Named on the awards were Arlyn S. Powell, Jr., group editorial director, Chris Hipp, senior illustrator, and Tracy Foy, former art director of the magazine. In complimenting all winners and entries, ASBPE national president Richard Green commented at the national ceremony that this year`s entries were high in quality, making the de- cisions difficult for the association`s judging panel. In all, 1840 entries were submitted.

Powell praised the efforts of all editorial, art, and production staffers who worked on the Fifth Anniversary issue, especially Hipp and Foy, who did most of the work on the cover itself. "All of us in editorial, art, and production spent a lot of extra time on the Fifth Anniversary issue. As you can see from our winning these awards, that kind of work does pay off with recognition in the field," he said.

Another PennWell publication, Laser Focus World, took home a silver award in the category Special Report/Special Section, Circulation Under 80,000, for the special report "Imaging: Law Enforcement and Security," in the November 1998 issue. The report was edited by executive editor for news W. Conard Holton and jointly written by Holton; senior editors Hassaun Jones-Bey, Paula M. Noaker, and John Wallace; associate editor Neil Savage; and contributor Stephen J. Matthews.
