Energy Star for Data Center program's slow start begins to speed up

Jun 3, 2011

In an article that appeared in the May issue of Cabling Installation & Maintenance magazine, we reported that few data center facilities have earned the Energy Star for Data Centers rating in the months since the Environmental Protection Agency began offering it.

Since that article went to press we have found a couple items that can serve as updates to it.

In researching the data center facilities that have earned the Energy Star for Data Centers label, we found statements from Citi indicating that one of the bank's facilities in the Midwest United States had earned the label. Yet the list of labeled facilities that is available on the EPA's website does not include Citi. Why not? A spokesperson for the company told us that the list on the EPA's site includes each facility's physical address. For reasons of security, Citi has chosen not to be included on that list.

Also, recently three more data centers have earned the Energy Star label and are now listed by the EPA: an AFLAC facility in Columbus, GA; a Corp 7 facility in Johnston, IA; and a Kaiser Permanente facility in Napa, CA.

You can see the EPA's list here.
