Storage area management system reduces data center cabling bulk

The Storage Area Management (SAM) system from Tyco Electronics' enterprise networks business reduces the bulkiness of cabling and connectors in data center storage area networks by more than 80 percent, the company says, enabling high-density deployment without cabinet or infrastructure upgrades.

The SAM system is now generally available and was unveiled at Brocade's Building Networks, Building Connections conference held in September. Ken Schreder, director of strategic alliances for Tyco Electronics' enterprise networks business unit, heaped praise on the system, saying that at the Brocade event, "People stopped in their tracks to come see it." He added, "Application-oriented infrastructure technologies bring value in the data center by helping to create smaller footprints, reduce power consumption, increase uptime, and speed moves-adds-and-changes."

According to Tyco Electronics, the SAM system reduces space requirements by managing as many as 576 duplex fiber ports within 2 rack units. It also reduces floor space by requiring no additional front vertical, side or horizontal cable-management devices. Additionally, it combats cable-mass and slack management via its linecard-optimized hydra assemblies, Tyco Electronics explains. The company adds that these characteristics of the SAM system provide users with easy port access, unobstructed linecard maintenance and simplified scalability. The system includes pre-labeled ports and color-coded as well as keyed trunk connections to speed up deployment and reduce connection errors.
