The development of standards and specifications for the manufacture, design, installation and maintenance of structured cabling components and systems is a detail-oriented and often lengthy process. Once cabling standards are finalized by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) they are used by many as the bedrock of system deployment. For many cabling-system designers and planners, there is also value in understanding detail of the standards currently under development within the TIA.

Presentation 1: The 942-A Data Center Cabling Standard
Developers of the first (A) revision of the Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers have made some decisions about the media—particularly optical fiber and optical connectivity—that will best serve the needs of data center managers. Those decisions will be reflected in the recognitions and recommendations in TIA-942-A concerning multimode fiber types and connector interface. This presentation will examine those aspects of 942-A, as well as others that will make 942-A different from its predecessor.

Presentation 2: Labeling and Administration According to TIA-606-B
When published, the TIA-606-B Administration Standard for Telecommunications Infrastructure will include several changes from the 606-A standard. Many of these changes will be made to enhance the standard’s usability in data center environments, and to harmonize with international labeling and administration standards. The TIA TR-42.6 Subcommittee working on 606-B is also developing a means by which users can visually identify cabling circuits that will carry power via Power over Ethernet. This presentation will provide an update on the new elements of TIA-606-B as well as the status of the revised standard’s progress.

Presentation 3: Update on Standardizing Bend-Insensitive Multimode Fiber
A task force within the TIA TR-42.12 Subcommittee on Digital Multimode Systems has been studying the characteristics of bend-insensitive multimode fiber (BIMMF) for the possibility of establishing standard specifications for the particular construction of multimode fiber. While technical positioning statements have been plentiful, this presentation will focus solely on the activities of the task force and assess the efforts the group is making to specify BIMMF.

Presentation 4: Next-Generation Twisted-Pair Cabling for Beyond 10G
A Next Generation Cabling task group has been formed within the TIA TR-42.7 Copper Cabling Systems Subcommittee to investigate the possibility of specifying a new category of balanced twisted-pair copper cabling systems. This presentation will provide an update on the task group’s activities, the rationale behind its efforts, and the process by which it is undertaking this research.

This seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, looks at several of the standards currently under development within TIA that will already are shaping the way cabling systems are deployed and used.
