Optical communications technologies are growing in popularity as enterprise and data center users require any combination of the speed, distance, security and future-readiness offered by fiber-based networks. The layer-one infrastructure that supports optical networks must be up to the task of meeting users’ current and future requirements. This webcast seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, will examine optical infrastructure “from the ground up” – including the optical fiber itself, fiber-optic cable, and connectivity options.
Presentation 1: Optical Fiber for Today’s and Tomorrow’s Networks
This presentation will focus on the optical fiber itself—the glass that is capable of carrying an enormous amount of data at extremely high speeds. It will discuss not the A-B-C’s, but rather, the 1-2-3-4’s, as in OM1 through OM4, describing the speed and distance capabilities of these classes of multimode fiber. The presentation will take a practical approach by explaining the typical applications for which each fiber type is being used today. It will place emphasis on the higher grades, OM3 and OM4, and offer guidance to users who have to choose a fiber type for their networks.
Presentation 2: Connectivity Options for High-Speed Systems
In fiber-optic connectivity environments, the need for density is a continuing trend. Users can benefit from achieving as many fiber connections as possible in as small a space as possible in the telecom room or data center. This presentation takes an overview look at the connectivity options available that are meeting these high-density needs for dual-fiber as well as multi-fiber cabling systems.
Presentation 3: Ensuring the Quality of Fiber Connections
This presentation will describe best practices for ensuring that fiber-optic connections are clean and of good quality. It will discuss inspection and cleaning techniques, and reference appropriate standards that prescribe methods for ensuring connector quality.
