Presentation 1: Standards and Best Practices for Cabling the
Because data centers are complex facilities comprising interdependent systems, it stands to reason they are governed by multiple standards and best-practice measures. This presentation provides an explanation of those standards and best practice measures that are most important to a data center’s cabling and networking professionals—including but not necessarily limited to the TIA-942 standard, ISO’s 24764 standard, and BICSI’s forthcoming Data Center Standard. The presentation takes the approach of “here’s-what-you-need-to-know” from a standards perspective for cabling professionals working in data centers.
The theme of thermal management continues to dominate discussions among data center managers—and remains a significant challenge to them. This presentation focuses on some of the latest technological trends surrounding thermal management. The presentation will devote attention to the growing importance of thermal-management and energy-efficiency metrics in the data center—that is, means of tangibly measuring the amount of energy a data center consumes.
Presentation 3: Looking ahead to 40- and 100-Gbit transmission
The IEEE is currently hard at work on the 802.3ba 40- and 100-Gigabit Ethernet protocol specifications, scheduled for completion in June 2010. This presentation provides an update on the IEEE’s current efforts, paying specific attention to the eventual deployment of 40- and 100-Gbit Ethernet in the data center. It discusses the drivers that will make such high speeds a reality in the data center. Most importantly, it will discuss the current and potential future media options for achieving such high-speed transmission in data center environments.
