Communications cabling products manufacturer and supplier Superior Essex today announced that it has received an "Outstanding Case Study Award" from the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC). The award was given on Wednesday, May 16 in recognition of the Superior Essex lighting retrofit in the historic West Baden Springs Hotel in French Lick, IN, and a case study subsequently contributed to SPLC’s online library. These awards recognize organizations for documenting their sustainable purchasing efforts in detailed case studies, enabling others to follow their lead.

Founded in 2013, the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council convenes buyers, suppliers, and public interest advocates to develop programs that simplify and standardize sustainable purchasing efforts by large organizations. The council has quickly attracted, from a wide variety of sectors and regions, more than 180 members with over $200 billion in collective purchasing power. In 2015, SPLC released "Guidance for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing v1.0," which the group touts as the most comprehensive literature to date on sustainable purchasing. "Hundreds of organizations are now using SPLC’s Guidance, resources, and online community of practice to create strategic sustainable purchasing programs, or enhance existing ones," says the council.

“We are proud to be recognized by the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council,” commented Will Bryan, Superior Essex vice president of marketing and technology. “The connected lighting solution we provided for West Baden is a great example of how our state-of-the-art Power-over-Ethernet cable suite, PowerWise, enables us to bring even historic buildings up-to-date with the latest technology, delivering greatly improved operational and energy efficiencies and a truly unique user experience. It’s important for us to be able to share through case studies what can be achieved with the aim of inspiring other companies to make sustainability an integral part of their purchasing.”

The West Baden Springs Hotel, located in French Lick, Indiana, is one of America’s oldest and most treasured resort hotels. Its domed atrium, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is remarkable for both its size and aesthetic and serves as one of the hotel’s main attractions. Superior Essex partnered with Platformatics to create a customized lighting solution for the atrium, using innovative physical infrastructure and leading lighting technology. The lighting solution preserved the architectural integrity of the iconic space, while creating a 98.5% increase in energy efficiency. Other benefits include data gathering and analytics, ease of use, occupant health and well-being, safety and productivity.

Per the company, "Superior Essex developed the PowerWise Power-over-Ethernet cable suite to meet the increasing demands of a smarter, more adaptive and more unified built environment. PowerWise helps customers create an efficient, dynamic environment that's customizable and easy to manage. As a leader in environmental performance, Superior Essex is proud to offer products that contribute to all green building standards, including LEED, WELL Building and the Living Building Challenge, because the technology that interconnects the world should also respect it."
