Center-launch-ready fiber

Corning has developed 50- and 62.5-micron multimode fibers that can accommodate an on-center laser launch in the 1300-nanometer operating window. Because of its center-launch capability, the InfiniCor CL series of multimode fibers eliminates the need for a mode-conditioning patch cord for Gigabit Ethernet transmission at 1300 nm. Because of its center-launch capability, the InfiniCor CL series of multimode fibers eliminates the need for a mode-conditioning patch cord for Gigabit Ethernet transmission at 1300 nm. InfiniCor CL 1000--the 62.5-micron version--will transmit to 500 meters at 850 nm and 1000 meters at 1300 nm in Gigabit Ethernet-compliant links. InfiniCor CL 2000--the 50-micron version--carries Gigabit Ethernet 600 meters at 850 nm and 2000 meters at 1300 nm in standards-compliant links.

Both fiber types are standards-compliant and compatible with the installed base of multimode fibers, Corning says. The fibers are designed for all premises applications in the campus backbone, building riser, and horizontal segments of a local area network.

Siecor (Hickory, NC) announced that it has incorporated InfiniCor CL fiber into its Gigabit Plus CL cables. The company is offering cable with InfiniCor CL 1000 fiber and expects to offer cable with InfiniCor CL 2000 as well.

Siecor and Corning stress that the elimination of a mode-conditioning patch cord in the 1300-nm operating window allows easier installation and use of a gigabit-capable fiber-optic cabling system.
