The eight-position eight-contact connector has become the truly global power interface, thanks to the worldwide adoption of standards-based Power over Ethernet technology. While PoE serves hundreds of millions of outlets and has been a proven technology for well over a decade, deploying PoE is not as simple as plugging in and forgetting about it. Issues such as interoperability, backward compatibility, and cabling-plant capability require consideration and action. This webcast seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, explores several aspects of Power over Ethernet, describing the steps users and technicians can take to ensure a standard-compliant and technically capable system is in place.

Presentation: IEEE 802.3bt Standard and Requirements
Since the publication of IEEE Std 802.3bt-2018, “Power over Ethernet over 4 pairs,” users have been eager to familiarize themselves with the new 60W (Type 3) and 90W (Type 4) PoE technology. This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the terminology, Ethernet interoperability, and PoE backward-compatibility requirements, typical startup procedure, power classification information, and supporting link section (cabling) requirements contained within this new amendment.

Presentation: Test considerations for PoE deployment
PoE is a key enabler of technology for smart connected buildings and Internet of Things devices. Newer applications in intelligent buildings, automation, security, healthcare and IT are demanding more power and speed from networks. With the latest approved IEEE 802.bt standard for 90W power delivery, it becomes all the more critical for cabling installations to be tested for parameters that impact both data transmission and power delivery. This presentation will look into testing considerations for PoE at various stages of network deployment, to assure connectivity and power delivery at endpoint powered devices.

Arvind C. Patel is Director of Engineering in the Test and Measurement Solutions division at AEM. He is a product engineer and architect with over 20 years of experience in electronic circuits & RF systems. Arvind has been involved in the design and development of Test and Measurement Solutions for the cabling industry for the last 15 years. He holds a B.Tech in Electrical & Electronics and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from National University of Singapore.
