Summary
Once the physical layer of a communications network has been certified to industry standards and/or to customer requirements, the need to test that infrastructure is not necessarily over. When problems arise or the network experiences unexpected performance issues, the ability to troubleshoot the physical layer is essential to making necessary fixes. This webcast seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, focuses on the tools and techniques of the troubleshooting process. Delivered by Fluke Networks’ Jim Davis, it tackles troubleshooting methods for three media types: copper cabling, fiber cabling, and air (WiFi). The seminar will discuss the challenges to copper networks that can be diagnosed through troubleshooting, along with the methods for identifying problems in fiber networks. It then will describe in detail the capabilities that exist to “see” the performance characteristics within the invisible medium (air) of wireless networks. Davis will wrap up the seminar by covering some testing techniques to use when the cabling or physical layer is determined not to be the problem—for example, tools and techniques to gather information on switch connectivity and Power over Ethernet.
