Summary
This session outlines the technology and deployment process for implementing a combination DAS / IoT Sensor Network. Specific topics include hardware needs, integration with existing network infrastructure, and use cases. Special attention is given to the “why”, exploring the synergies that make DAS-based IoT Sensor Networks a practical option for those responsible for building care, IT systems, and occupant comfort and safety.
The need for indoor cellular coverage is growing – having moved from nice-to-have, to must have.
The need for in-building cellular DAS is driven by:
• Energy-efficient building materials and construction methods shielding cellular signals from adequately covering indoor spaces
• Upwards of 80% of cellular traffic coming from inside buildings
• Safety for residents, employees, visitors, and customers; ability to reach 9-1-1 and other emergency services
• The increasing need to use apps and send/receive texts and data to navigate modern life
With so many in-building DAS being deployed, it makes sense to leverage the complete coverage footprint of those systems to do more than distribute signals. By deploying DAS with smart server antennas and an AI-enabled edge server, a DAS easily becomes an IoT sensor network, enabling a wide range of applications – from smart building controls to security monitoring to panic buttons and gunshot detection. Leading-edge DAS technology can, at relatively low cost, turn on and integrate IoT and private networking for any-sized building.
