April 18, 2001 Xilinx Inc. (www.xilinx.com) and Digital Harmony (www.digitalharmony.com) announced WireFree, a complete reference design based on Xilinx low-cost Spartan-II FPGAs. WireFree allows consumer manufacturers to immediately integrate multi-channel high-performance wireless digital audio networking into a wide range of home audio applications including home theatre, whole house audio/video systems, and fixed installation audio. WireFree uses a patent-pending diversity technique that minimizes multi-path interference and operates in the five GHz band per FCC Part 15.407a3 without interfering with other household frequencies. WireFree supports any uncompressed digital audio format at rates of up to ten Mbits per second over distances of up to 100 feet from the transmitter. WireFree also supports error-free reception through most interior walls and ceilings while providing audio data encryption for listening privacy.
