February 2, 2007 -- Optellios Inc. recently announced plans to produce and distribute a line of products enabling video and data transmission over fiber-optic cable.
According to a press release issued by the company, the announcement comes as a result of a license agreement with Cisco. The new products will become part of the company's Fiber Patrol security platform, offered by the company to its government, military, and commercial customers.
The Fiber Patrol brand currently features advanced fiber-optic intrusion detection systems targeting perimeter and infrastructure security needs. "We deploy miles and miles of fiber-optic sensor cable as part of our installation. It didn't take long to realize that the same cable can be used to transmit video and data signals from security cameras or any other field equipment," comments Jay Patel, CEO of Optellios Inc.
The licensed technology, which Cisco obtained in its acquisition of SyPixx Networks, covers the transmission of non-compressed (non-IP) video and supporting data over fiber. Optellios says it will now be able to offer a complete line of fiber-optic video and data transmitting and receiving units with a communication range of up to 50 miles. The company notes that the technology will enable dual use of its Fiber Patrol sensor cable, reducing the cost of infrastructure development for Optellios clients.
The Fiber Patrol intrusion detection products are designed to be integrated with various third-party video surveillance systems via the Fiber Patrol Remote Alarm Management software, a network-based reconfigurable security administration platform. Optellios says the complete platform provides for multi-layer protection and verification capabilities. The company contends that physical integration of intrusion sensing with video and data transmission is the next step in the evolution of such advanced security systems.
"The agreement with Cisco will allow us to offer integrated sensing / communication solutions to the security industry from a single source," concludes Patel.
