February 13, 2009 -- Active Power, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of energy-efficient uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, has joined the HP Data Center Solution Builders program. Under terms of an agreement, Active Power will offer its PowerHouse containerized power and cooling architecture for the HP Performance Optimized Data Center (POD). Active Power will make available a standard sized 450 kW configuration that can power a single HP POD, as well as configurable solutions that can power several HP PODs.

Active Power has leveraged its flywheel UPS technology in the PowerHouse design, described as a rugged, space-efficient and complete continuous power system that can include a standby generator, high efficiency flywheel UPS system, chiller and switchgear. The systems are used for a variety of applications including space constrained facilities, modular power expansion, rental fleets, disaster recovery and short term business operations.

"As part of HP's Data Center Solution Builders program, Active Power is now able to offer HP POD customers one of the most energy and space efficient and reliable power and cooling solutions in the world," comments Jim Clishem, president and CEO, Active Power.

"Especially in today's economic environment, data center owners are looking for ways to reduce both capital and operating expenses," said Steve Cumings, director of infrastructure, scalable computing and infrastructure, HP. "The combination of Active Power's PowerHouse solution and the HP POD enables customers to add data center capacity as they need it, and deploy much faster than with traditional brick-and-mortar construction."

"This collaboration places HP and Active Power in a strong position to help customers successfully deploy data centers economically and rapidly," continues Clishem. "Customers can reduce capital expenditures on electrical and mechanical infrastructure by approximately 25 percent and total cost of ownership by approximately 60 percent. This is in addition to the benefits of the HP POD."

HP Data Center Solution Builders is a worldwide program between HP and leading data center infrastructure firms. The goals of the program are to develop and deliver new technologies as well as services targeted towards energy conservation and other operational improvements in data center operation or management.
