IEEE publishes wireless engineering guidebook

March 31, 2009--The IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc)has announced the availability of the 2009 version of A Guide to the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK). The 272-page guidebook was developed as an educational resource for the organization's Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification Program.

March 31, 2009--The IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc)has announced the availability of the 2009 version of A Guide to the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK). The 272-page guidebook was developed as an educational resource for the organization's Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification Program, as well as for wireless industry professionals seeking comprehensive knowledge on commonly accepted best practices and the evolution of wireless technologies.

"This guide represents the cumulative efforts of the IEEE Communications Society and an international body of wireless industry professionals," says Celia Desmond, IEEE WCET program director. "We believe the WEBOK will become an indispensable resource for everyone involved in the wireless industry, no matter their level or area of expertise."

According to Rolf Frantz, the program's industry relations manager, "The WEBOK was specifically developed to provide wireless industry professionals worldwide with a common technical and global understanding of the core principles involved in wide ranging wireless communications technologies."

Edited by Gustavo Giannattasio and published by John Wiley and Sons, the WEBOK contains the content and contributions of more than 50 selected international wireless communications experts. Each chapter is dedicated to the evolution, impact and common best practices of one of the following seven technical areas:
• Wireless access technologies;
• Network and service architecture;
• Network management and security;
• Radio frequency engineering, propagation and antennas;
• Facilities infrastructure;
• Agreements, standards, policies and regulations;
• Wireless engineering fundamentals.

Since the publication contains a large number of references and suggestions for further reading, the IEEE says it is also "an excellent resource for increasing the understanding of wireless communications and evolving industry standards. In addition, while the WEBOK is not designed as a study guide for the IEEE WCET examination, it does provide an ideal resource for reviewing the covered topics."

The WEBOK is available at bookstores or can be ordered from the IEEE WCET.
