SMC Networks intros VDSL2 infrastructure platform aimed at MDUs

July 1, 2009 -- SMC Networks says its TigerAccess Extended Ethernet platform enables the distribution of high-speed network connectivity for advanced voice, video and data applications over existing telephone wires, eliminating the cost of installing Ethernet cabling.

July 1, 2009 -- SMC Networks released its TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch (SMC7824M/VSW) and TigerAccess Extended Ethernet CPE (SMC7801A/VCP) products in a product line dubbed the TigerAccess VDSL2 Extended Ethernet Solution. For use in multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environments such as hotels and office buildings, the products enables the deployment of voice, video, and data access with bandwidth up to 100 Mbps over existing category 1, 2 or 3 wiring.

For use in buildings without an Ethernet wiring infrastructure, or as a replacement for outdated VDSL1 equipment, the platform utilizes VDSL2 technology to deliver high-bandwidth network connectivity to support services such as HDTV streaming, video-on-demand and high-speed Internet access over existing telephone wiring infrastructure.

For hotels that currently have an ad hoc network infrastructure, SMC's 24-port VDSL2 solution represents a manageable system for delivering secure high-speed network connectivity to guests.

In addition, many of the current deployed VDSL solutions are based on older technologies that cannot support the advanced bandwidth-intensive applications that today's travelers demand. Our new VDSL2 solution allows users to deliver those bandwidth-intensive applications to each guest room using the existing phone wire infrastructure enabling them to meet the demands of their guests without the expense and time required to install an Ethernet-based infrastructure."

TigerAccess VDSL2 solves that problem with advanced features like DiffServ, Rate Limiting, or 4,000 802.1q VLAN capability which ensure that this suite of products come with the features that compliment the applications most important to our clients."

The TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch (SMC7824M/VSW) features two RJ-21 ports, which contain 24 extended Ethernet ports, two RJ-45 Gigabit uplink ports, a 100BASE-T management port, and RJ-45 console port. Based upon the VDSL2 standard, the SMC7824M/VSW delivers speeds of up to 100 Mbps to a distance of 800 feet.
