Arrow, IMS sign NA distribution agreement for power, environmental monitoring systems

Nov. 2, 2009
Arrow ECS has become exclusive North American distributor of IMS's EDX DC-3 monitoring platform for data centers.

November 2, 2009 --Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions, a business segment of Arrow Electronics Inc, has become the exclusive distributor of Integrated Monitoring Solutions' (IMS) Environmental Data Exchange DC-3 power- and environmental-monitoring systems for data centers. Under terms of an agreement, IMS will work closely with Arrow ECS to market and sell the EDX DC-3 systems to data centers across North America.

According to IMS, the systems combine real-time monitoring with complementary services such as annual environmental assessments to assist data center managers in better understanding airflow, temperature, humidity and power-consumption issues at a very detailed level. Via wireless and noninvasive sensing technologies, the systems deliver comprehensive monitoring and user-defined environmental alerts. Further, the EDX DC-3 architecture is designed to allow for rapid deployment and scalability.

“EDX DC-3 enables users to better understand and optimize their power costs and improve their overall operations in terms of airflow, cooling and other environmental factors. EDX DC-3 expands our portfolio of complementary products for high-demand solutions that our resellers can provide to their customers,” comments Robert Boulet, vice president, Canada, for Arrow ECS. “In addition to creating ongoing electricity savings, a monitoring and assessment solution like EDX DC-3 can help customers qualify for financial-incentive programs offered by many energy utilities for peak-Kilowatt reduction.”

“IMS has historically provided comprehensive environmental-monitoring solutions to a broad range of markets. This agreement with Arrow ECS allows us to reach a larger IT market, and to deliver complementary products and services through Arrow ECS’ resellers,” adds Alan Ruth, chief executive officer for IMS. “With this partnership in place, Arrow ECS resellers will now be better equipped to provide clients with the necessary evidence to support virtualization and consolidation projects. Just as important, resellers will also have a valuable tool to assist their customers in their ongoing operations.”

Lewis Hooper, chief information officer of Central East Local Health Integration Network in Ontario, Canada, offers this bit of testimonial regarding the IMS EDX DC-3 system's performance:

“Through the data that EDX DC-3 provided, the Scarborough Hospital was able to identify several areas for improvement," he says. "The multilevel thermal imaging helped identify inefficiencies in the airflow under the raised flooring, as well as issues with rack placement."

Hooper adds, "The data the EDX DC-3 power collector provided was a significant part of the business case for the data center consolidation. Through optimal temperature monitoring, data center redesign and server virtualization, we anticipate a 40- to 50-percent savings on power requirements, and a 40- to 50-percent reduction in carbon emissions.”
