MRV debuts 10G fiber media converter for distances up to 100 km

The MRV Fiber Driver EM316-10G-XY delivers converter, repeater and WDM transponder functionality in single module.

CHATSWORTH, Calif. --MRV Communications, Inc. has introduced the Fiber Driver EM316-10G-XY, a 10-Gbps media converter for enterprise and carrier applications. The EM316-10G-XY is the latest addition in the company’s XY family of next-generation optical media converters.

The company says its Fiber Driver XY family of media converters offers multiple functions combined with a flexible multi-rate small form-factor pluggable (SFP) design. The devices feature built-in media conversion, signal repeating and lambda conversion with optional wave division multiplexing (WDM) technology available via SFP interfaces. MRV’s XY family of media converters, which debuted in 2005, includes the EM316SW-XY, for Fast Ethernet networks, the EM316T1E1-XY, for T1/E1 networks, and the EM316GSW-XY, for Fast/Gigabit Ethernet networks.

The compact, hot-swappable, one-slot EM316-10G-XY combines two XFP ports and one SFP+ port. It can be set to act as a redundant converter, a WDM transponder or as a 10Gbps optical link repeater. The EM316-10G-XY provides full 3R functionality for any 10G protocol within the range of 9.9 Gbps and 11.3 Gbps, supporting 10G Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET and SDH, in addition to FEC rates for the mentioned protocols.

The module may act as a redundant converter/transponder, by providing two redundant XFP-based optical links for the SFP+ based access port. When equipped with WDM XFP optics, the module becomes a redundant WDM transponder. With XFP optics reaching 100km without amplification, the EM316-10G-XY supplies significant distance extension over gray or WDM networks for enterprise and carrier markets.

In XFP-repeater mode, the EM316-10G-XY provides XFP-to-XFP signal regeneration over multiple hops. Each hop may be up to 100km without need for amplification.

“10Gbps networks are in flux with new fiber and copper standards hitting the market and companies pushing this performance to new parts of the enterprise, which is driving an increase in demand for network flexibility,” said Noam Lotan, chief executive officer of MRV Communications. “The EM316-10G-XY allows our customers to optimize existing network infrastructures and prepare for future network evolutions in a cost effective way.”

With such large amounts of data travelling between locations, proper management is crucial to the success of network operations, maintains the company. Using MRV’s MegaVision Pro network management system, users have full graphical management of a network of EM316-10G-XY devices. Additionally, the EM316-10G-XY supports Link Integrity Notification (LIN), in which a loss of link on an input port automatically shuts off any associated output ports. LIN ensures that a change in connection status propagates from one end device to the other.

The EM316-10G-XY module is available now from MRV sales representatives and channel partners.
