TE Connectivity showcasing mobile DAS, fiber connectivity platforms at CTIA Wireless 2011

March 21, 2011
TE Connectivity will also host two events at its booth during this week's CTIA conference in Orlando, FL.

TE Connectivity (TE) will showcase its portfolio of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) solutions at the International CTIA Wireless 2011 show to be held in Orlando, Florida, March 22-24. In addition, TE will be displaying its new RAPID fiber patch panel, the latest addition to its RAPID product portfolio that significantly reduces installation time and labor costs for turning up new fiber equipment. These solutions will be shown in booth #2418 at the show.

TE says 'centralized radio intelligence makes more sense'

TE contends that the new trend toward distributed radio intelligence in mobile networks may be "a trip down the wrong path," and that centralized radio intelligence offers lower costs, better scalability, higher spectral efficiency and greater flexibility for mobile operators.

The company suggests that while many large system vendors are embarking on strategies that distribute small radios throughout the network to create the small-cell architecture that will be required for LTE and other advanced services, there are better ways to solve the problem.

Further, TE notes that using distributed radios may cause carriers to overbuild capacity when it’s not necessary, while centralized network intelligence provides equivalent coverage capability and does it in a way that uses spectrum and other resources more efficiently.

“Distributing radios throughout the mobile network means geometric expansion in backhaul and maintenance costs while making it more difficult to use spectrum efficiently,” says Chris Jurasek, vice president of TE Wireless & Services. “In contrast, our distributed antenna systems rely on centralized radio resources that are much easier to backhaul, maintain, and upgrade over time.”

TE is displaying three DAS solutions at CTIA:

InterReach Fusion – An in-building DAS that uses a single set of electronics to support two sets of frequencies.

InterReach Spectrum – An in-building DAS that supports up to eight licensed mobile frequencies with a single set of electronics and integrates with TE’s outdoor DAS.

FlexWave Prism – An outdoor DAS that allows mobile operators to extend multi-band, multi-service outdoor coverage and capacity through a system of compact, inexpensive remote antennas.

All TE DAS solutions support a full range of services, including 700 and 800 MHz LTE, 2.6 GHz LTE, 3G and 2G, enabling them to expand network reach and capacity while supporting new as well as legacy services. These systems promote centralized network intelligence by extending the distribution of signals from a centralized base station hotel. The systems are protocol-agnostic and support multiple frequencies so mobile operators can deliver a range of services through a single set of antennas. In addition, the antennas are small and unobtrusive, making it easy to deploy them in areas with strict zoning laws, according to TE.

Rapid Panel Streamlines Fiber Deployment

Also debuting at CTIA and featuring TE’s RapidReel internal fiber cable spool, the company's new RAPID fiber panel is a product for data centers, base stations, and other telecom equipment centers that helps reduce engineering time, simplify product selection and ordering, shorten product lead time, speed equipment installation and reduce cable congestion in the network.

TE contends that its RAPID fiber panel conserves physical space by effectively combining the intermediate distribution panel with an intra-facility cable (IFC). With up to 100 feet of IFC cable available on each panel, installers can simply pay out the precise length they need from the internal spool. The multifiber cable terminates to a high performance multi-fiber push-on connector (MPO), which enables a rapid plug-and-play connection to the main optical distribution frame.

TE Connectivity to Host Two Events at CTIA

TE Connectivity will host two events at its booth during the CTIA conference:

A Toast to Technology – TE will demonstrate the RAPID fiber panel while providing refreshments from 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 22.

Colleague Connect – TE will host refreshments while providing an opportunity for networking and conversation from 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 23.
