60-watt, IP66-rated PoE midspan enables outdoor installation of wireless APs, IP cameras

Microsemi's PD-9501GO/AC also protects indoor equipment from outdoor electrical surges caused by lightning.

Microsemi has released its PD-9501GO/AC, a 60-watt Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) midspan designed to deliver power over standard Ethernet cabling to outdoor devices such as WLAN access points and IP cameras.

Outdoor rated to International Protection 66 (IP66) standards, the PD-9501GO/AC single port midspan supports the IEEE 802.3at standard at 10/100/1000 Mbps data rates for outdoor installations, and is backward-compatible with the earlier IEEE 802.3af standard. With an extended temperature range of -40 to +55 degrees C, the device allows WLAN access points, security network cameras and other IP terminals located outdoors to receive power, along with data, over standard Ethernet cables, leaving network infrastructure unaltered.

Microsemi notes that use of the midspan may solve power-deployment challenges associated with outdoor locations where electrical outlets are not always available, extreme temperatures or humidity are often a factor, and equipment must withstand surges caused by lightning. With surge protection for both alternating current (AC) and PoE ports, the PD-9501GO/AC also protects indoor equipment from outdoor surges that could damage powered devices and their network switches, without the need for companion protection units.

Like Microsemi's other 60W midspans, the PD-9501GO/AC includes a gigabit interface to more easily support high-power devices such as pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and WLAN APs that support 802.11n. The device also implements two-event classification as specified in the IEEE 802.3at specifications for communications with connected devices. Microsemi is demonstrating the new midspan, which is now available, at ISC West (Mar. 28-30) in booth #5045.
