Power strip monitors usage, temperature wirelessly

Geist and Packet Power team up on a data center monitoring tool.

The PWM intelligent wireless power strip integrates Packet Power's wireless power- and temperature-monitoring technology into a Geist power strip. Through this combination, users are able to wirelessly access the unit's amps, volts, frequency, volt-amps, watts, kilowatt-hours, power-factor and temperature measurements.

Packet Power's chief executive officer Steve VanTassel said the incorporation of his company's wireless monitoring capability into Geist's power strip helps make data center monitoring easy and affordable. Geist executive vice president Brad Wilson describes the capability as "a very flexible solution for monitoring power usage throughout a facility. The fact that the PWM gathers and transmits this data on only one IP address is a critical step in driving data center costs down."

When jointly announcing the product, the companies said, "Wireless transfer of information back to a single collection point means the entire power monitoring network can reside on one IP address. Integration of this data with Geist's RackNet or Environet DCiM solutions provides seamless presentation of power data combined with the power and flexibility of Geist's DCiM solutions."

The PWM power strips are available from Geist and Power Packet.
