Deutsche Telekom admits WLAN router security flaw

Router models reportedly suffer from a glitch in programming that allows unauthorized infiltration of a user's WLAN network.

Germany's Deutsche Telekom has confirmed that its Speedport W 504V, Speedport W 723V Type B and Speedport W 921V WLAN routers are prey to a security flaw that allows hackers to easily access a user's WLAN, including Internet and home network components such as storage devices. The router models reportedly suffer from a glitch in programming that allows unauthorized infiltration of a user's WLAN network via "a particular PIN number which is being circulated on the Internet."

Telekom is advising affected customers to deactivate the WPS wireless connection security function of the Speedport W 504V and Speedport W 723V Type B models through the configuration interface until a software patch is released. Owners of the Speedport W 921V router are advised to shut down their wireless networks altogether. The company says it's working with the router's manufacturer to ensure that future router models are preconfigured more securely. The number of customers affected by the security flaw is estimated to be over 100,000.
