A new white paper from APC by Schneider Electric contends that it is no longer practical or cost-effective to completely engineer all aspects of a unique data center, and therefore, re-use of proven, documented subsystems or complete designs is now the best practice for both construction of new data centers and upgrades to existing ones.

Authored by Patrick Donovan, the 12-page, graphical white paper describes what a data center reference design is, what it includes, and how its benefits can be achieved. Further, the document explains how use of reference designs can simplify and shorten the planning and implementation process for data centers and/or their sub-sections, while reducing downtime risks once facilities are up and running.
