TIA opposes FCC on lower 700 MHz band mobile device interoperability

June 7, 2012
TIA urges FCC to reject mandated interoperability of mobile devices in the lower 700 MHz wireless spectrum band.

The Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) filed comments on June 1 in a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) proceeding considering mandating the interoperability of mobile devices in the lower 700 MHz wireless spectrum band.

The TIA urged the Commission to reject such a mandate. The association said the requirement "could present significant technical and interference problems, severely delay the availability of wireless devices in the 700 MHz spectrum, and violate the Commission’s policy of technology neutrality."

Concurrently, as reported by TeleGeography, Wi-Fi chip maker Qualcomm is said to be developing a new RF chipset capable of supporting seven spectrum bands, including three below 1 GHz (as well as three higher bands and one very high band, such as 2.5GHz) with a goal to resolve the concerns over interoperability in the fractured 700 MHz spectrum band.
