Distance meter assesses UTP, coaxial cabling

Klein Tools’ newest test instrument measures Cat 3, 5e and 6 as well as RG6, 11 and 59 cable circuits.

The VDV Distance Meter, now available from Klein Tools, measures cable length and locates faults at distances up to 1,500 feet for applications such as voice, data, video, doorbell, siamese, lamp-wire and nonmetallic (NM) cables. The manufacturer explains, “It has six preprogrammed nominal cable-length constants for RG59, RG6 and RG11 coaxial as well as Cat 3, Cat 5e and Cat 6 twisted pair. In addition, the VDV Distance Meter lets the user adjust the capacitance/foot constant based on the cable being tested.

“The tester also ensures compliance and identifies cable runs outside specification,” Klein also notes. “The fault-finder feature determines if a cable run is broken or damaged.” The company also says the tool is a time- and money-saver because it increases efficiency by measuring the cable left in a box or on a reel.

Klein Tools product manager Chris Niklas says, “Our customers want a dependable measuring tool at a cost-effective price. The VDV Distance Meter is the only product that can measure cable length and determine faults at this price point while maintaining quality and reliability. It is a great addition to the Klein VDV Scout Pro, which tests for cable continuity.”

The meter is available through distribution.

These Tower Tech XR cooling towers use evaporative cooling to remove heat generated within the data center by IT equipment. Composite cooling towers are more compact and significantly lighter than metal towers. They arrive at a data center site pre-built.
