Ars Technicanotes that "Apple was dinged by Greenpeace International in an April 2012 report for using fossil fuels and coal to power its operations." Apple has now stated on its website that its data centers run exclusively on energy from sources such as solar, wind and geothermal, instead of coal or other fossil fuels.

In its environmental update, Apple reported that a 100-acre solar farm located adjacent to its largest data center, in Maiden, NC, became fully operational this past December. The solar array, coupled with a large installation of fuel cells that convert biogases into energy, allowed the company to meet its goal of generating 60 percent of the data center's energy on-site, it said.
