A closer look at PoE+ risks

Nexans white paper explores risks to cabling infrastructure.

A new white paper from Nexans discusses the standards involved with Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) technology, highlights the challenges that PoE+ poses to cabling, and proposes the best copper systems options currently available.

The paper's abstract states, "PoE+ has existed since 2009 and combines power and data transmission in a single cable supporting applications up to 25.5 Watts. Compared with its predecessor, PoE (from 2003), which delivers up to 12.95 Watts, the risks to cabling infrastructure from PoE+ are increased. Higher power increases the temperature inside the cable; and therefore, also, the attenuation. Additionally, spark discharge caused by unplugging of connections under load risks damaging the connectors."
