TE unveils cabling system for vertical blade-based core data center switches

April 17, 2013
In TE Connectivity's core VSM platform, all patch cables, whether fiber or copper, are managed vertically -- and just one length of patch cord is required to patch within a frame.

TE Connectivity (NYSE: TEL) has introduced what it calls "an application-driven solution for the unique cabling challenges presented by vertical blade-based core switch systems" in data centers. TE says its core Vertical Switch Management (VSM) platform routes cables directly from switch ports to patch panels above the switch, providing space, access, and maintenance benefits to high-density core switches with vertical blade configurations.

According to the company, in the new core VSM platform, all patch cables, whether fiber or copper, are managed vertically, and just one length of patch cord is required to patch within a frame, simplifying the build process and ongoing logistics. The design consists of a cable management guide that fits above the switch, and copper or fiber modules that provide connections for blades of either media.

The complete core VSM platform can be installed within an 800 mm wide cabinet, saving valuable white space in the data center, contends the company.

“The core VSM solution removes the need for cable management at the side of the frame, bringing a number of benefits to the data center. Space savings, cost reductions, and enhanced efficiency are realized by ensuring clear representation of the switch ports and ease of access,” comments Ken Hall, national account manager within TE’s Enterprise Networks business. “These efficiencies help reduce 'Day 2' activities. Plus, inventory is reduced by only having to stock a single patch cord length. It all adds up to a powerful return on investment.”

Main features and benefits of TE's core VSM solution, summarized, include: cabling routes directly from switch to ports to patch panels above the switch; logical representation of the switch ports and ease of access; single patch cord lengths; simplified blade changeover; support for both copper and fiber cabling, facilitating the migration from one to the other. Compatibility with TE’s Universal Connectivity Platform for advanced modular cabling is also supported.
