Verizon deploys 100G on edge routers

Service provider says it has deployed 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE) interfaces on the edge routers of its Private IP network.

Verizon (NASDAQ: VZ) reports that it has deployed 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE) interfaces on the edge routers of its Private IP network. The service provider says it is rolling out the new capabilities on the same U.S. and European routes where it has already deployed 100-Gbps long-haul technology.

“The increase in demand for cloud and data center connectivity is driving the decision to expand our service offering to higher speeds in order to meet the bandwidth needs of our customers by providing reliable, high-performance and secure services,” said Ihab Tarazi, vice president of product technology. “Verizon is a leader in high-bandwidth technology, and extending 100GbE to the edge is the next natural step for us.”

The global carrier positions its Private IP service as a means to support communication and business-process automation, supporting such applications as e-commerce, shared intranets and extranets, and video. The 100GbE capabilities will provide the data rates and capacity its customers need to keep pace with growing demands for remote data access, particularly cloud-based services, Verizon says.

“Our customers are transforming the way they access information and increasingly are looking to quickly turn their big data into information that offers real business advantages,” added Rich Montgomery, Verizon group vice president for Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. “Extending 100GbE to the edge gives customers the connectivity they need to run their businesses most effectively while staying competitive in the global market.”

The company also has begun to offer standardized 1GbE and 10GbE access for its Private IP network. Service standardization enables quicker ordering and delivery, Verizon asserts.
