Watch Cabling Icon contestants install cable down a wall in 2 minutes

Dec. 11, 2013
Four contestants advanced to the competition’s third round, in which they had to show how efficiently they could complete an in-wall cable drop.

This year’s Cabling Icon contest—the competition produced by Concert Technologies that looks for the world’s premier cableinstaller or technician—has reached its third round and its final four contestants. In this third round, each contestant has two minutes to install a cable down a wall, and had to submit a video demonstrating their ability to do so.

The four contestants to reach this round (click each contestant’s name to see his video) are: Joenathan Barnes of MTM Media and Communications in Chesapeake, VA; John Crawford of Hitech Communications in Hiawatha, IA; John Kurtz of NCS Data Systems in Chicago; and David Mayhew of Axis Technical Services in New Westminster, BC Canada.

Contest creator Concert Technologies said it developed Cabling Icon “as the industry’s first entirely interactive contest to find the world’s best low-voltage installer or technician. The goal of the competition is to increase awareness of the low-voltage cabling industry, camaraderie among installers/technicians and increase the opportunity for education and career advancement in the low-voltage cabling industry. With a series of rounds demonstrating different skills and the guidance of a panel of judges, the Cabling Icon contest recognizes the skills, knowledge and hard work of the field techs.”

Three of the four remaining contestants will advance to the final round, and each of those three will receive cash prizes. The third-place contestant will receive a $500 cash prize, and the second-place contestant will receive a $1,000 cash prize. The individual named this year’s Cabling Icon will win a $3,500 cash prize as well as the Golden Punch Down Award plaque, an embroidered Cabling Icon leather vest, and bragging rights as well as the worldwide recognition of being the Cabling Icon.

Below, you can watch the “drop-cable-down-wall” video submitted last year by eventual Cabling Icon champion Alberto Luna.
